The anatomy of a landing page that converts at 12%

Nine structural decisions that separate landing pages that print pipeline from the ones that just look tidy.

High-converting landing pages are rarely more beautiful than low-converting ones. They are more specific.

Specificity starts with message match. If the ad promised a price, the page opens with the price. If the ad named an industry, the headline names that industry. Every point of friction between what was promised and what appears costs you conversions before anyone reads a word of your copy.

The second decision is what to prove and when. Social proof placed above the fold rarely helps, because the visitor has not yet formed the objection it answers. Placed immediately after your primary claim, it converts.

Third: reduce the number of decisions rather than the number of fields. A four-field form on a page with six competing calls to action will underperform an eight-field form on a page with one.

Fourth, and most neglected: design the page for the state the visitor arrives in. Cold traffic needs context. Retargeted traffic needs a reason to act now. The same page cannot do both well, and trying is how you end up with a 2% conversion rate and no idea why.
